Lukastra was a dark mage, who appeared in books through the Wardstone Chronicles to the Starblade Chronicles.

Summary[]

Lukrasta is the most powerful human mage to have ever lived. According to common knowledge, he wrote the contents of the Doomdryte, a powerful grimoire that would grant godlike powers to the person who could successfully complete the ritual within the book. The legend further states that Lukrasta was struck dead when tried and failed to complete the ritual. In reality, however, Lukrasta succeeded and obtained incredible powers.

When Alice and Grimalkin plotted to use the Doomdryte to give Alice the power necessary to destroy the Fiend, Lukrasta appeared before them immediately after the grimoire was opened. He defeated Grimalkin with ease and only spared her at Alice's request. According to Grimalkin, Alice and Lukrasta embraced like lovers before departing. Alice was now a full blown malevolent witch, Lukrasta's equal and the foremost servants of the Fiend.

Lukrasta and Alice retreated to his tower at Cymru, taking with them the Fiend's head. Tom attacked the tower and fought against an entire coven of witches. During the fray, Lukrasta attempted to smite him with a bolt of energy, but Tom's lamia heritage protected him against the dark magic. With the aid of the boggart, Kratch, Tom defeated the coven, and Lukrasta was convinced by Alice to flee rather than confront Tom. Later, Lukrasta would plan to seize the Fiend's head from Chipenden and murder all he found there, but Alice went in his place, retrieving the Fiend's head and sparing Tom, Grimalkin, and John Gregory.

During the final battle at the Wardstone, Alice and Lukrasta combined their powers to create a massive spell of dread, which initially incapacitated the entire attacking force of powerful witches (and a few seventh sons of seventh sons). Despite his and Alice's efforts, Tom slew the Fiend, and the Wardstone transported Tom and the Fiend's body to the Dark, where Talkus, the newly born Kobalos god, absorbed the Fiend's power. Alice revealed to Tom that all of her and Lukrasta's machinations were designed to prevent the Kobalos god's ascendancy and the resulting extermination of mankind and enslavement of all human females. Nevertheless, Tom confronted Lukrasta with the Starblade. The mage attempted to use his magic against Tom, but found that the Starblade repulsed his magic. Undaunted, Lukrasta engaged Tom in a duel, but lost. Tom only spared his life when Alice intervened.

Lukrasta and Alice continue their battle against the Kobalos in the Starblade series. In the first book, Lukrasta engineers a duel between a Kobalos assassin and Tom, and once again combines his might with Alice to freeze Tom momentarily and allow the assassin to deal Tom a mortal wound. Lukrasta uses dark magic to create a thought form of an angel, which resurrects Tom, and inspires the local human forces to rally behind Tom. Alice and Lukrasta then try to use the "Space between Worlds" to infiltrate Valkarky, capital of the Kobals. Unbeknownst to them, the Kobalos high mages are well aware of the Space between Worlds, and lay an ambush there. Lukrasta is captured, and while Alice barely escapes, she assumes him dead.

In reality, the Kobalos torture Lukrasta in attempts to gain information on their enemies. They cut off his hands and keep him locked in horrendous conditions. When Grimalkin dies and learns to pass between the worlds as a dark assassin, one of her first missions, at the command of Pan, is to rescue Lukrasta from the Kobalos dungeons. Lukrasta recovers quickly, especially when he is fashioned a new pair of silver hands. He creates a plan to lure Talkus to his tower at Cymru, which he will then move through time to the very beginnings of the earth, and drop Talkus into the magma and trap him for all eternity.

Grimalkin acts as the bait and lures Talkus to the tower, but Lukrasta betrays her and Tom. Now that the Old Gods are at the war with each other, particularly Pan and Golgoth, Lukrasta believes he can climb to the top of the power vacuum and become a new dark god. Only Grimalkin is powerful enough to stand in his way. Tom and Grimalkin push Talkus into the primordial lava and escape Lukrasta's trap. Grimalkin departs to rescue female slaves from the Kobalos, while Tom stays with Alice to hunt Lukrasta. Alice realizes Lukrasta will only appear once Tom has laid aside the protection of the Starblade. She convinces Tom to give her the Starblade, and Lukrasta appears. Tom believes Alice has betrayed him, and awaits his death as Alice swings the Starblade. However, she brings the blade around and decapitates Lukrasta. Lukrasta's death unleashes too much power for the Starblade to handle, and dissolves the powerful weapon.

Powers[]

Lukrasta has been repeatedly stated to be the most powerful human mage to have ever lived. By successfully completing the ritual of the Doomdryte, he is believed to possess godlike powers. Once the Old God Siscoi had perished, Lukrasta seemed to be chief among the Fiend's lieutenants. He has been shown to defeat Grimalkin, one of the most powerful witches appearing in the series, with ease, and is likely still somewhat more potent than Alice due to greater experience and knowledge. Among his powers include incredible scrying abilities and a deeper understanding of prophecy than most witches; he realized that his visions of the future, while powerful predictors, could change depending on the choices and actions of the living in the present. He also appeared to wield some power over time, using this power to move his tower of Cymru through that dimension.

Lukrasta can cast bolts of energy that kill grown men from a distance. He appears to be capable of a highly advanced form of dread that paralyzed the normally fearless Grimalkin completely. When combining his might with Alice, he was able to temporarily extend this paralyzing dread over an army of a few hundred witches. The Spook believed Lukrasta capable of easily destroying the boggart Kratch, which was powerful enough to destroy an entire coven of witches and even fend off powerful demons like the Bane.

However, Lukrasta is not without weakness. On his own, his power is not strong enough to overwhelm the Starblade's defenses. He is a highly deadly swordsman but appears to be a shade inferior in skill to Tom. Overwhelming numbers and trickery can also incapacitate him, as shown when several Kobalos high mages ambushed Alice and him in the Space between Worlds. Perhaps chief among Lukrasta's weaknesses was his trust of Alice and blindness to her love of Tom, which allowed her to trick him in the end and destroy him.
